Abstract

Birdwatching tourism represents a sustainable alternative linking biodiversity conservation with local development. This research analyzes birdwatching (aviturismo) as a driver of sustainable development in communities surrounding the Cotacachi Cayapas National Park (PNCC), Ecuador. A qualitative, descriptive, non-experimental approach was applied using semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and ornithological checklists following the eBird methodology. The sample included 42 participants: local residents, birdwatchers, and MAATE officials. Results indicate a high avifaunal richness (79 species, 25 families), mainly Trochilidae (13 spp.) and Tyrannidae (12 spp.), confirming the area’s tourism potential. Interviews revealed limited infrastructure but strong community willingness to participate in tourism management. It is concluded that avitourism offers a viable opportunity to diversify rural economies, enhance environmental education, and strengthen community governance, provided it is managed with sustainability and environmental responsibility.
