Abstract

This article emerges from qualitative research that explains the sources of access to open public spaces for the practice of Karate-Do in the municipality of Cocorote, Yaracuy state, Venezuela, with the purpose of strengthening community support networks. Through a phenomenological model and a Grounded Theory approach, the central category “Open Dojo” was analyzed, supported by the theories of the social production of space by Lefebvre (1974/2013) and the “third space” in Soja’s (2010) concept of spatial justice, communicative action of Habermas (1981/1987), and earth pedagogy of Gadotti (2000). The findings, presented through a triangulation table and an interrelation matrix, reveal that accessibility to public spaces for Karate-Do practice requires a process of social negotiation, recognition of the ontological and axiological dimension of the dojo, and the construction of support networks based on communication and community participation. It is concluded that the opening of the dojo to public space transforms the practice of Karate-Do into an experience of territorial appropriation and social cohesion.
